Theories Applied to Storyboard

Tzvetan Todorov's theory of equilibrium is applied at the beginning of my trailer presenting Cecelia in a state of equilibrium as she and Max speak of their future together and how much they love each other. However as the trailer proceeds disequilibrium is included when drastic events begin happening for example when CeCe stabs her partner in the neck. 

I have partially adapted Vladimir Propps character theory as I have a small group of people who play a damsel in distress. Usually a hero aims to rescue the "Princess" before she can get hurt or killed, however in this case the damsel has not go a hero. A prime example of one of my damsels in distress is Eden (lydia) who is captured and tortured. 

Outline of my Trailer - Updated Written Storyboard

Having had more time to think about my final trailer I have been mentally reconstructing my storyboard and have come to the decision that I do not want to start my trailer on a high, instead my trailer will start violently and horrifically in order to set the right mood and atmosphere.

Order of scenes:
- For the opening of my trailer I was struggling with a way to naturally enforce my music into the trailer. Therefore I have decided that my trailer instead of beginning with a high, is going to start with a low with a terrible scene. Cecelia (Mollie) is already going to be in her psychotic stage and is torturing her friend Eden (Lydia Gould). The trailer starts with Cecelia putting on "I only have eyes for you" by The flamingos and dancing around to it as she duct tapes Eden to a chair who is already battered and bruised. Cecelia proceeds to torture and abuse Eden and passes out making the screen black out in order to go into the next clip. Mid angle shot. 20 seconds long.        2 minutes 10 seconds left
- Appropriate audiences MPAA graphic clip  3 seconds long.           2 minutes 5 seconds left
- This first clip shows the audience the settings and society that my trailer is based around. I will use a crane up shot to the house. The audience is then exposed to a conversation between Max (William Hadden) and Carlos (Conor) medium shots, close ups and low angled shots where Max reveals that he plans on proposing to Cecelia. It is revealed that Cecilia is being forced into this relationship. 7 seconds long.    1 minute 58 seconds left
- I will use a crane down shot from the trees to provide my audience with the setting (the graveyard) or a pan from across the graveyard floor allowing you to see the stones, you will be able to see Conrad (Philip Rook) walking up to his wife's grave. A medium close up will be used allowing the audience to see the back of the gravestone and Conrad who pours himself and his wife a shot of whiskey, cheersing the glass and drinking it. A small crane down shot will be applied to reveal the name on the headstone.   15 seconds long.    1 minute 43 seconds left
- This will be a short clip between Cecelia and her stepmother, Anne (Judith Bielby). Anne will present CeCe the necklace which is stored within a box of old pictures, letters and diary entries, Anne says  "Your mother would have wanted to have this" close ups and long shots will be used for this clip.  5 seconds long. 1 minute 38 seconds left.
- Institution logo 5 seconds long. 1 minute 35 seconds left
- Wedding scene. This clip will be 20 seconds long. Including a big group of girls they are all getting ready for the big day together, doing each other's makeup and hair, filming the celebration and drinking champagne. In this clip I am going to be using the following camera angles and shots: Extreme close up, Close ups, medium close ups, medium long shots and pans.      1 minute 15 seconds left.
- Writing on screen. "Every family has it's black sheep" 3 seconds long.        1 minute 11 seconds left.
- This scene will be one of the most suspenseful scenes in my trailer as it is based on something that I always get nervous about happening to me. This clip will begin with a long shot of everybody sat down for dinner, CeCe, Max, Conrad and Anne. One of my characters will make a thing about running out of win. Anne volunteers to go into the wine cellar to go and retrieve a bottle. On her way down the stairs the step-mum will trip and fall down the last couple of stairs and when she goes to retrieve her torch she hears a sound. Shining a torch in the direction that the noise came from she is unable to see anything but stacks of wine. Anne grabs the torch and turns to grab the wine when she hears the creaking noise again, this time when she shines the torch to where the sound came from CeCe is in the corner and starts running at Anne and chases her up the stairs, grabbing at her ankles and her dress. This scene is going to be one of my longest clips at 25 seconds long.    46 seconds left.
- This short clip reveals Ce looking inside the box using a (point of view shot) that she received the necklace in. The audience are shown pictures of different members (names on the back/front of photograph) of the family all wearing her necklace including her mother (a picture of her mum and dad in the box) she finds diary entries talking about wanting to kill their loved ones. 7 seconds long.  Extreme close up shot will be applied to show the audience her emotions and feelings.   39 seconds left.
- An extreme long shot and long shot will be used to show Posey (Rosie) walking down a corridor looking at old beautiful paintings. One particular painting happens to catch her eye and when she stops and walks a few steps back to her to get a closer look a hand comes bursting out of the painting and grabs her by the neck. Posey is trying to escape. This shot will be taken using a medium shot and medium close up. This overall clip will take roughly 15 seconds long.  24 seconds left.
-  For the ending of my film trailer this scene will involve Cecelia stabbing Max in the neck whilst they are in bed. This clip will involve low angle and high angle shots as CeCe holds the knife to his face and a long shot and medium long shot will be applied when you see her stabbing him. This clip will be 10 seconds long.       4 seconds left.
- The film title will end the trailer abruptly and will show up on the screen for 4 seconds.

Poster Inspiraion

The above images have inspired me for my own individual movie poster. You will notice that the majority of the pictures and film posters center around their faces showing either two perspectives of a person as if they are a schizophreniac or revolving around an old image or sketch, these are effective as they dominate the frame and make it more personal and intimate between them and the viewer. This will hopefully make the audience feel uncomfortable and threatened which is what I am hoping for as it relates to my chosen genre. The common colours used are browns, blacks and reds as these are all connotations of death and danger. 

I am planning on taking a picture of a girl in a victorian dress in the style of an old vintage photograph wearing the necklace to enhance the fact that it is old. I will do something like blur out the girl's face or include a creepy and unnatural object or effect to make her unrecognisable which will worry the audience. 

Risk Assessment

Identifying hazards is the first step in my risk management process. It is important for me to identify all the hazards, evaluate the risks and identify measures to control the risks. A risk assessment is a vital section for an effective and safe team to help prevent hazards, the optimum outcome is dependant on whether or not staff have considered and taken into account their obligations. It is important for both  my actors and crew to commit to the process. 

Summary of the taken in a risk assessment:

1) Identify hazard                                       - Hazard identified: member of the team identifies hazard.

                                                                     - Consultation: alert an authority figure about the hazard.

                                                                     - Context: Consider the factor of the potential hazard. 

2) Assess hazard                                          - Assess the potential danger surrounding the hazard.

                                                                     - Highlight the level of risk taking into account the odds.
                                                                     - Risks are prioritized.
                                                                     - Remove hazard in order of potential danger.
3) Eliminate hazard                                     - Consider surrounding when getting rid of the hazard.
4) If eliminating the hazard is unsuccessful I must find a solution for controlling the hazard through investigation.


I need to ensure that I:

• Identify risks that require my urgent attention.
• Allocate responsibilities to eliminate the hazard efficiently, quickly and safely.
• Ensure the time set to remove the potential threat is realistic and achievable.
• Controls are monitored and reviewed and documented.

Possible Backing Track for my Trailer

It is evident that I am swaying towards using more of a 'cheerful' melody in my horror film trailer to manipulate my viewers emotions.
The contrast between the beauty of the music and the horror of the events that are happening confuses the audiences instincts.
The camera techniques used will create suspense as the screen emphasises on a horrific occurrence that is developing forcing the viewer to feel uncomfortable as they are enjoying the music and watching people get massacred.
I was inspired by Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street because you will notice that whenever Freddy Krueger is chasing a character in their dreams you will hear happy disco music.
Listening to upbeat music is a common notion for someone to do when they're in the house on their own. It is a natural for my character to automatically put on the radio or their favourite playlist  to put on a playlist which is why my audience will be able to relate to it, creating an unsettling feeling.
I was also inspired by Quentin Tarantino who is well recognised for using cheerful and unnatural music when their is a big climax or murder. In Tarantino's film 'Reservoir Dogs' the ear cutting scene is very memorable mainly because the villain plays and sings along to the hit track 'stuck in the middle with you' by Stealers Wheel. This can enforce an almost comedic outlook on the situation or hopefully will make you feel nervous and anxious
The use of a heartwarming and tender song, a serenade about a fresh new journey of love and companionship is ironing to the situation as she hates Max and their future together will not be as long as the hopeful song depicts almost like an invitation of love that you want to ignore.
The song 'I only have eyes for you' lends itself to the purpose of the storyline as establishes an ironic opposite to the lyrics of the 1959 record. The song is all about love and new starts, singing the lyrics such as, "My love must be a kind of blind love, I can't see anyone but you". The on screen performance however will be conflicting against the lyrics as Cecelia is scared to fall in love and is being forced into the marriage by her partner Max. The use f this soundtrack is to enhance the calm before the storm as whilst The Flamingos sing about being blinded by love, ".. millions of people go by but they all disappear from view and I only have eyes for you" their is a horrific undertone as CeCe murders and stalks the ones she loves.

Inspirational Horror Directors

Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was born in Leytonstone, Essex, England. He was the son of Emma Jane and William Hitchcock. He had two older siblings, William Hitchcock and Eileen Hitchcock.

In 1920 when Hitchcock joined the film industry. He started off drawing the sets as he was a very skilled artist and it was there that he met Alma Reville however they hardly ever spoke to each other. It was only after the director for Always Tell Your Wife fell ill and Hitchcock had to stand in to direct. Because Alfred Hitchcock had done such a good job when he stood in they began to collaborate.

Alfred Hitchcock directed his first proper film from start to finish, in 1923 when he was hired to direct the film Number 13, however the production wasn't completed as the studio closed. Hitchcock then progressed to direct a film called The Pleasure Garden in 1925,  which was very popular and a big success. His success really began when he made a number of films in Britain for example, The Lady Vanishes and Jamaica Inn and which brought him attention in the US. 

In 1940, Alfred Hitchcock and his family moved to Hollywood, where he met American producer David O' Selznick who then hired him to direct an adaptation of 'Daphne du Maurier''s Rebecca. His fame as a director grew and film companies began to refer to his films as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy. In the late 1970's, Hitchcock was knighted, making him Sir Alfred Hitchcock. On the 29th April 1980 he died peacefully in his sleep due to renal failure.

Stephen King

Stephen Edwin King was born on the 21st of September, 1947 at the Maine General Hospital in Portland. His parents are Nellie Ruth and Donald Edwin King. 

He began his actual writing career in January, 1959 when Stephen decided to publish his own local newspaper called "Dave's Rag".

Stephen King made his first small sale of $35 with his story called "The Glass Floor". In June 1970 King graduated from the University of Maine with a Bachelor in Science and a degree in English and a certificate to teach in high school. 

On January the 2nd 1971, he married Tabitha King. In 1971 Stephen took a teaching job at Hampden Academy, earning only $6,400 a year. King began working on a short story about a teenage girl named Caretta White however after completing only a few pages, he decided that it was not a worthy story crumpling the pages up and tossing them into the bin. Thankfully, his wife Tabitha took the pages out and read them and then encouraged her husband to continue the story, which he did. In January 1973 he submitted "Carrie". On May the 12th the publishers, Doubleday sold the paperback rights for the novel to the New American Library for $400,000. His contract allowed him to get half of that sum, and he quit his teaching job to pursue writing full time.

John Carpenter 

John Carpenter was educated at Western Kentucky university. He began making short films in 1962. He won an academy award for Best Live-Action Short Subject in 1970, for The Resurrection of Broncho Billy. Carpenter formed a band in the mid 1970's called The Coupe de Villes. Since then he has had numerous roles in the film industry including writer, actor, composer, producer, and director.

Letter Request to film at The White Lion

This is a rough template of what I want to say to Xavier Diers who is the manager of The White Lion Pub on Great Missenden High Street.

However I was unable to find his email address so I therefore had to go into the restaurant to request permission to film in his pub.

After our discussion we came to the agreement that I would be able to bring in some friends and film my scene on Wednesday 5th November, 2015 from 4:00-5:30. Xavier did not want me to come during the restaurants peak times as it would be too difficult for me to film and it may cause some disturbance between his customers. Because I was filming whilst there was no one was around it therefore gave me free range of the entire pub and I was able to control the music and lighting to create different moods. 

The reason why I chose this location is because I was looking for a place that would be able to pass as a fancy restaurant where a hen night would take place. One advantage too filming at Origins is the fact that it is local and therefore easy for both myself and my actors to get there. Also putting into consideration that if I needed to do some more filming it would be easy for us to get there and film more for the clip. 

In Origins they supplied me with a remote that allowed me to control the lighting in the restaurant. I had a choice of Red, Green, Blue, White

Red: The colour of fire and bloods it is therefore associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire and love. 

Green: The color of nature, symbolizing growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional link with safety. 

Blue: The color of the sky and sea and is often associated with depth and stability. Blue can also symbolise trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. 

White: The colour white is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection. 

I was initially going to chose red as I though it had the right connotations of the horror genre. However because this clip is so early on in my trailer where my character is not yet a total psycho I did not feel that red supplied the audience with a clear understanding of what was happening in that short clip. 

On second hand I did try the red lighting to see how it looked and I don't believe the tiny looked right on the camera.

Reviewing Genres

Horror Genre

A style of film that is unsettling and aims to evoke a negative sense of fear or enforce panicked reaction from the watchers by playing on their fears as a scare tactic. A horror film relies on scaring the audience through the portrayal of you worst nightmares and your nervousness surrounding your fear of the unknown.
Plots within the horror genre often consist of the intrusion or interruption of an evil force or persona in a common everyday scenario. Centered around this evil force, person or event, horror films often incorporate a substantial amount of violence and gore and are frequently based on a mythical creature such as a vampire, ghost or zombie.  

Some of the most widely recognized films are:

Psycho - Directed by the famous Alfred Hitchcock. This horror film is about a Phoenix office worker named Marion Crane who steals $40,000 in order to run away with her boyfriend when she is trusted to bank it by her employer. Tired by the long drive Marion's boyfriend Sam Loomis is overcome by exhaustion during a heavy rainstorm. Getting off the main highway to avoid the police, they pull into Bates Motel to stop off for the night. Bates Motel is managed by a quiet young man named Norman who seems to be dominated by his mother.
Psycho was released on September 8th, 1960.







The Shining - Released on May 23rd, 1980 and directed by Stanley Kubrick this horror was already lined up for awards such as Staturn, Razzie and the OFTA film hall of fame.
This film follows the story of Jack Torrance, a former teacher and now writer who agrees to look after an isolated hotel for the winter which has a long, violent past where an evil and supernatural presence influences the father into violence.
As Jack grows more and more aggressive, his psychic son, Danny foresees their tragic ends and tries to use his special talent, the "shining" to tell people on the outside what is going on inside the hotel.
This horror film received rave reviews such as one that was written by The New York Times, "Meticulously detailed and  never less than fascinating, The Shining may be the first movie that even made its audience jump with a title that simply says "Tuesday"

The Exorcist - This classic supernatural horror hybrid film directed by William Freidkin created such a massive uproar that it is one of the most profitable horror movies ever made. 

Loosely based on actual events, this terrifying film us about an actress who notices dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior of her 12 year old daughter. The teenager becomes possessed by a mysterious spiritual entity. Her mother attempts to win back her daughter with the aid of an exorcism carried out by two priests.
Originally rated X with cuts in the 1970's. The Exorcist was banned under the Video Recordings Act 1984 from home viewing and was temporarily removed from film stores.

Poltergeist - Unlike the majority of horror films this one was made even more scary when a series of sudden and mysterious deaths occurred. 

This blockbuster movie is a supernatural horror thriller hybrid directed by Tobe Hooper that was released on June 4th, 1982. Written by the famous Steven Spielberg, this film became one of the most memorable and psychological films ever to be made. The plot focuses on a young family who are visited by a group of ghosts. At first the ghosts seem to be friendly as they move objects around the home much to their amusement. However these supernatural spirits turn nasty as they begin taking pleasure from terrorizing and frightening the family before they kidnap the youngest child, Carol Ann Freeling.
Mysterious stories surrounding 'The Poltergeist' :
1) Human skeletons - The whole ordeal began when Steven Spielberg insisted on using actual human skeletons as props in an attempt to save money during the production. One of the film's most famous scenes is when Diane Freeling falls into the family pool that is filled with mud and skeletons. The actors believed them to be either plastic or rubber however later found out that they were in fact real corpses.
2) First film star murdered - Dominique Dunne who played the part of the eldest daughter Dana was murdered by her abusive ex just four months after the movie was released. When Dunne turned down her former boyfriend he brutally strangled her on her own driveway.
3) The expulsion of evil spirits - An exorcism was performed on the set of the film by actor Will Sampson as he was concerned about the use of real human skeletons. The Native American star went to the set late at night alone to carry it out. At age 53 he died of malnutrition and kidney failure when the operation went drastically wrong.
4) Child star dies at 12 - The death of such an iconic young star is probably one of the most convincing cases for the "Poltergeist Curse". Actress Heather o'Rourke who played the lead role of Carol Ann Freeling died at age 12 a few months before the release of Poltergeist III from a cardiac arrest and septic shock caused by a misdiagnosed intestinal failure.
5) Ax murder - In 2009, cast member Lou Perryman who played the role of Pugsley was 67  years old when an ex convict brutally murdered him in his own home with an ax.

Thriller Genre

Thriller's largely develop and stimulate the audience's mood by creating a high level of anticipation, expectation, suspense and excitement. The aim for a film that falls under the genre of a Thriller is to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seats. They tend to be fast paced, arousing and realistic. 

Thrillers often follow Vladimir Propps theory which involves a Hero, Villain and Damsel in distress. The Thriller movie will commonly be villain driven, where obstacles, feelings and challenges are presented that the protagonist must overcome in order to save a loved one, their beliefs or the world. The film will emphasize the danger that the protagonist faces. The suspense and excitement is built as the film continues and ends with either a massive climax, plot twist or cliffhanger.

Rebecca - Directed by Alfred Hitchcock this thriller film won two Academy Awards, Outstanding Production and Cinematography out of 11 nominations. Adapted from Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel this film is about a naive young woman (Joan Fontaine), whose name is never mentioned, who meets the wealthy aristocrat but brooding widower Maxim de Winter (Laurence Oliver) when staying in Monte Carlo where she is working as a paid companion to her stuffy employer named Edythe Van Hopper (Florence Bates). She and Maximilian fall in love and within two weeks get married. Returning from their honeymoon to his large estate in Cornwall called Manderley, the narrator in character is introduced to Maxim's mysterious dead wife Rebecca who lost her life in a boating accident the year before.
Maxim still troubled by her unexpected death fights to try and forget her revealing his past to the second Mrs de Winter after she continuously clashes with Manderley's housekeeper Mrs Danvers (Judith Anderson) who is trying to keep Rebecca alive in the household.
Released on the 12th April, 1940 in the United States this thriller, drama and romance hybrid is still a very successful movie.

Bourne - The trilogy consists of, The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and The Bourne Legacy (2012). The Bourne films are a series of action thriller hybrid spy films adapted from the novels written by Robert Ludlum based on the character Jason Bourne (Matt Damon). The film follows the story of a CIA assassin suffering from extreme memory loss after he was found floating in the Mediterranean Sea with two gunshot wounds in his back. The movie follows Bourne as he steadily recovers the secrets of his identity and past. 








Bond - Based on the novels written by Ian Fleming, the Bond films made its first appearance in 1962 with Dr. No where Bond was played by Sean Connery. Since then, the character of James Bond has been portrayed by actors, David Niven (1967), George Lazenby (1969), Roger Moore (1973-1985), Timothy Dalton (1987 - 1989), Pierce Brosnan (1995-2002) and finally Daniel Craig (2006 - present), in twenty-six productions.
The Bond films follow James, a British  00 agent working for MI6 who also answers to his code name, 007.
Ian Fleming portrayed Bond as a tall, athletic and handsome man in his thirties or forties. His addictions are women, drinking, smoking, gambling and automobiles. James Bond is known as an excellent marksman and is highly skilled in unarmed combat, skiing, swimming and golf.

Whilst in Russia Bond becomes romantically involved with Tatiana Romanova and has to sneak his way around Istanbul as he tries to escape from a team of SPECTRE agents and Ronald 'Red' Grant who are trying to kill him.

007 finds himself in Switzerland when he is trying to find Ernst Stavro Blofeld one more time, posing as Sir Hilary Bray to allow him to find out Blofeld's secret plan. Bond finds himself getting married. Is it part of his mission, cover or is Bond allowing himself to love?

Synopsis: Diamonds are Forever is the seventh spy film in the James Bond series produced by EON.

Adopting the identity of Peter Franks he partners with Tiffany Case to act as if he is the one smuggling the diamonds to try and draw out the guilty thief.
